About Literary Oddballs: Find the Extraordinary

At Kaya Press, we seek out and amplify cutting-edge literature from around the world that doesn’t only entertain, but fundamentally shifts the reader’s way of seeing. We believe that the written word should outlive the page, that it should reverberate into your creative practice, expand your imaginative horizon, and deepen your relationship to your everyday environment. We believe the most essential work literature can do is to let you encounter the world through a radically different mind—a different cultural or linguistic framework—and to be permanently transformed by that encounter.

No one embodies this ethos more than radical Japanese genius Genpei Akasegawa. For him, attention is a radical tool that forces us to witness the strange and revelatory textures of the world we inhabit.

Akasegawa is an archetype of the Kaya author: the global literary “weirdos.” Voices that are overlooked because they don’t fit a trendline, yet bend perception in ways mainstream publishing doesn’t know how to value.

Kaya publishes those voices, those that make the unfamiliar familiar, the invisible visible, and shift the world you thought you knew.

Help us raise $10,000 for work inspired by Genpei Akasegawa by December 31, 2025.

This fundraiser is part of Kaya Press's 2025 Make It Rain annual drive, and all donations are tax deductible. At Kaya Press, we believe that books and community help us all thrive. Your support as readers, writers, educators, and customers is the reason we have made it to 31 years as an independent publishing house dedicated to championing avant-garde, experimental, and expectation-busting literature from the Asian Pacific American and Asian diasporas.
